Perks of being a Wallflower- Stephen Chbosky

The Perks of being Wallflower

This six weeks I read the Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It was copyrighted in 1999 and the genre of the book is fiction and young adult literature. The book is about a freshman named Charlie and how he goes through high school and family problems. He is also known as a "wallflower" to his friends. Eventually, he goes on to experience realistic events that happen to people today. The theme of the book is coming of age because as Charlie understands things he begins to become mature.

The story is told by journal entries that Charlie writes and he tells you about how his day was like and what he did. Also, he wrote out his thoughts on certain subjects. He is a freshman and high school and doesn't really know what high school is all about and how to act. As he goes on he begins to understand what happens to people and why they change in high school. He goes through first dates and family drama. The book is intended for young adults. The general genre of the book is young adult literature because readers can relate to the problems that Charlie has. The author applies topics that happen to people everyday. The author is very expressive he uses figurative languages and explains Charlie's emotions. His style is effective because of the way Charlie acts and the conflicts in the book.

The book made me realize that sometimes people have problems that you wouldn't expect them to have because they hide their feelings very well. It changed my view because Charlie is a very emotional person and he doesn't try to hide his feelings he expresses them through his emotions. I usually see that people don't express their feelings about something because they don't want someone to be hurt. It reminds me of the Fault in Our Stars because Augustus expressed his feelings but in a different way than Charlie does he acts out and tells people his opinions.

The book has a lot of character because you can relate to some of the things in the real world. I recommend this book because it has problems and events that teens our age go through. It also shows how no one is perfect and that if you be yourself people will accept you.
